To
the Stranger
To the stranger at my window,
To the watcher through the glass,
To the figure at my front door,
Where a long shadow is cast.
You must be very tired there,
Come in and take a seat,
Come closer to the fireplace,
And let me warm your feet.
Chorus
Your journey was a taxing one,
That much is very true.
And a mad man's day is never done.
Until the last load is through.
Until the last soul's free from danger,
Rest is pointless to the stranger.
Your eyes are growing heavy.
And your body, quite relaxed,
Your head is falling forward,
And is almost in your lap.
Chorus
Did you see me falling,
To the plights of overworked?
You thought you had the upper hand.
But I knew just where you lurked.
Until the last soul's free from danger,
Rest is pointless to the stranger.
So many came before you,
And so many will come after.
And the job that you inhabit,
Will be mocked in fits of laughter.
Your failure duly noted,
In my last and final breath,
Many, many years from now,
That I outsmarted death.
Chorus
Your journey was a taxing one,
That much is very true.
And a mad man's day is never done.
Until the last load is through.
Until the last soul's free from danger,
Rest is pointless to the stranger.
To the stranger...
